Anthony Hains, 'The Torment' Book Review

Anthony Hains’ writing truly gets better and better. His descriptions are accurate, detailed, and creatively bound. His storylines and plots are always addictive and compelling. He invites you into a world he has clearly spend a great time crafting and perfecting. This novel is no exception!

A small-town sheriff by the name of Lacey Nelson, who has seen her fair share of deaths, both normal and unexplainable. The locals in town think that the high murder rate is due to The Torment. The Torment is a curse that began with a massacre over a hundred years ago on Somers Mountain. Lacey doesn’t buy into this nonsense. She is a scientific and factual person and sheriff. She seeks out truthful reasons for the multiple deaths. Each and every case she gets given goes through her thorough vetting process, searching for rational explanations rather than Hocus Pocus silliness.
That is, until a drug-addicted troublemaker shows up, begging to be kept safe from his son of nine.

Enticed yet? You’ll never see it coming. Any of it. The explanations, the madness, the murder. It will shake you to your core.

I was particularly impressed with the character development of Lacey Nelson. She wasn’t so much a character as a person. She embodies the realist in us, always identifying rational explanations and shaking off the faintest sniff of delusional thinking spawned from group hysteria and small-town conformity.

If you wanted a novel to compare this to, I can honestly think of none. It had an original pace, a vibe that is unparallel to any other work of fiction I’ve come across. It’s truly spellbinding. And even when you are scared to your bones, you’ll be dying to read more.

Anthony Hains is a hell of an author and this book is one to read this summer!

Chaos, creepiness, shocks, intrigue, and action, all tied together with a quick pace and flawless writing.

In order to establish a professional online presence, there are a few things you should do. Some of which are outlined below.

1) Engage. Don't ignore your customers. Engage with them. Whether that's in comments of a post on social media, or messages to a social networking account, or in other ways of communication.

2) Produce Quality Content. Don't rush. Don't compromise your integrity. Always put your all behind your content. Customers will appreciate this.

3) Widespread. Don't just stick to one social networking account. Despite where you think your target audience 'hangs out', be widespread. Expand your outreach.

4) Establish Target Audience. How can you create marketing campaigns, create good copy with wording that's appealing to your audience, if you don't know who your audience is? PLUS: A benefit of this is when you know who your audience is you can post on the social networking accounts they are mostly on, and at the times they tend to be active.

5) Conduct yourself professionally and politely. Never argue, insult or patronise, or rant politics. Be entertaining, informative, and memorable.

AUTHOR'S SELF-EDITING CHECKLIST

Picture
Before you send off to an editor or proofreader, why not make their job easier and appear more professional by weeding out simple mistakes?

1) Redundancies. Why say 'stand up' when you can say 'stand' instead? Another example is: she slapped him with her hand. The redundancy being 'her hand'.

2) Misspelled or misused words. The most common being where, was, were, to, too, of, off.

3) Overused words. Keep a note of words you notice are used frequently, search in the end and replace if necessary.

4) Avoid unnecessary adverbs. Why say he ran quickly when you can say he raced, galloped, zoomed, etc?

5) Use power verbs!
Don't say her hair was long and went over her shoulders down to her butt. Say it spilled over her shoulders, swishing at her rump as she moseyed by.

That isn't everything, but it's enough to help comb through your manuscript prior to sending it off to an editor or proofreader.

5 CHRISTMAS MARKETING TIPS

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Let the joyous season spill into your marketing campaigns and various promotions. How can you take advantage of the season to increase your profit margin? Let's see.

1) Add some glam to your banners. People love Christmas decorations. That isn't exclusive to trees and houses; they like it on everything! So by making a banner glimmery, it will attract more festive eyes.

2) Hashtag holiday. We all know how crucial hashtags are for marketing success. Flood your campaigns and promos with hashtags suited to the season: #christmas #holiday #festive and so on. Your promo will come up in more searches!

3) People loosen the purse strings this time of year, so it's important to market. Even if you hate marketing, it would be a grave mistake to not market around Christmas.

4) While Christmas is a great time to market, do not market on Christmas day! Everyone is opening presents, spending time with families, and so forth. Don't waste time and money marketing on that day.

5) However, DO market the day after Christmas in case people didn't get the presents they wanted. And of course, the run-up to Christmas. People may want a treat for all the shopping, or be buying a gift for someone else.

All in all, this time of year is excellent for marketing. So don't miss out. Get working on your campaign right now! Struggling how to devise a marketing campaign? Here's another one of our blogs to help:

5 TIPS FOR A KILLER BLURB!

10/27/2017

Picture
1) HOOK.
You've gotta have a great, irresistible hook. In one short sentence, convey the main story within the book.

Examples:
He wakes up on an empty plane at 35,000 feet. What now?
She thought it was over. But no, it's back for blood.

Take a look at your fave books and read their hooks. See how the bestselling authors do it.

2) BRIEF SUMMARY.
Now, here is where you go into more detail. In a snappy paragraph, establish characters, issues, themes, and the plot. Again, trim the fat. They don't need the entire story, just the essentials.

3) REVIEWS.
You have to add some legitimacy to the book and your author reputation by offering the readers some reviews, either by customers or bloggers. A couple of short reviews, preferably 4 or 5 stars.

4) ANY AWARDS.
Won an award? Congrats! Don't waste that bragging right; put it in your blurb!

5) BUY IT.
So, they've read your blurb. How do you finish it? Convince them to buy:
Grab your copy today! Buy it now! Don't wait, get your copy today! Or something to that effect.
That last sentence must give them an option to buy.

5 TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL BOOK LAUNCH!

10/27/2017

Picture
A thorough book launch is crucial for the book to be a success! Here are my 5 tips to guarantee that will happen!

1) PRE-ORDER.
Many authors overlook this feature, but it is a great tool in getting your book off to a cracking start! All the sales you collect during your pre-order period will hit on the release day, shooting you up the ranking. So, market through social media and collect as many as you can!

2) ADVANCE REVIEWS.
Not just customer reviews, but bloggers and respected reviewing websites, will impress readers and influence book sales.

3) BANNERS.
Prepare banners for the pre-order period, release period, and if you are planning on running a giveaway or heavy price discount. Make them bold and informative. Don't bog them down with too much text. All you need is the price, maybe one or two blurbs from reviewers, and a hook line for the book itself.

4) MARKETING SERVICES.
Try and test as many services as you can. Mix them up. Plan to have each service go out during the seven days of your release week. This will keep it in the ranking, ensuring it is seen by many readers.

5) REGULAR INVESTING.
It's not just the launch week, but regular investing is crucial to stay in the limelight and continually be seen by new and interested readers. Invest in monthly marketing/advertising. This could be newsletters, Amazon ads, or social media ads. Figure out a budget, and stick to it. Only spend on marketing what makes sense. Keep track of results so you don't waste your time.

5 TIPS FOR AUTHOR SUCCESS

9/19/2017

Picture
1) 99 CENT / PENCE MILLIONAIRE.
Most authors have heard of this phenomenon: the 99 cent millionaire. Basically, if you price your book at 3 or 4 dollars, you have a chance of selling okay, given the cover, blurb, and content are good, and a marketing plan is in place. But, if you price your book at 99 cents / pence, you'll likely sell more, which means more individual readers, more reviews, and a larger outreach. I know what you're thinking, what about the money? Well, if you sell a few more copies at 99 cents the profit will balance out, if not work out for the better. As an author as well as an editor/marketer/formatter, I have found that my books sell greater when priced at 99 cents / pence. You actually make more money than if you priced it higher. And as already said, you are reaching more readers - which is what you want to do - but getting the same (or more) profit.

2) UPSELL.
Never miss out on an upsell. Have banners on your site for your books. Have teasers at the end of your books, advertising your other releases. You get the idea. This will create a snowball effect and have readers going from one of your books, to another, and another.

3) HAVE A PROFESSIONAL LOOKING WEBSITE.
You may think readers won't visit your site. This would be a grave mistake. They may be interested in your other releases, or grabbing a freebie, as many authors offer a free incentive to sign up to their newsletter. Not forgetting, you should mention your website at the back of every book, enticing them to go and check it out. So, why would you have a shabby site? Make it professional. If you don't know how, find help.

4) HAVE A SOCIAL MEDIA PRESENCE.
We all have our preferred sites, whether it be Twitter, Pinterest, FB, Instagram etc. But it's better to have an account with every social networking site out there. You don't wanna miss out on readers. It may seem overwhelming, but once it's done it's done. You can copy and paste the same info from each. This will just help you reach more readers.

5) FOCUS ON GETTING REVIEWS.
We all know the importance of reviews. Lots of reviews will sway readers to grab a copy. You want a mixture of good and bad (yes bad) reviews to add legitimacy to the book. Contact bloggers, look on Goodreads, ask friends and family, find reviewer websites. This requires effort if you are serious about your author career.

5 MARKETING TIPS FOR NEW AUTHORS

9/19/2017

Picture
1) DON'T SPAM.
Spamming is the worst thing you can do as a new author. You'll get a really bad reputation very quickly.

2) POWER OF HASHTAGS.
Many authors overlook this but hashtags increase visibility greatly. Your tweets, posts, shares, will be seen by a much larger audience by just adding a few hashtags: #read #book #amreading and more that relate to your posts.

3) THINK ABOUT YOUR TARGET AUDIENCE.
Again, most authors just promote willy-nilly. But if you don't know your target audience, how do you know who to target and how? Take a beat and research your target audience. This will help you determine where to promote, when, how much time to invest in the promotion, and what promotion would work best (advertisements, active promotion, newsletters etc).

4) HAVE A QUALITY PRODUCT WORTH SELLING.
Did you have your book professionally edited and proofread? Do you have an explosive cover? Did you take time on your blurb? Did you send out advance review copies? Did you devise a worthy marketing campaign and seek professional marketing help also? If you answered yes to all these, then you're set. If not, then it's back to the drawing board!

5) OFFER SOMETHING FREE AT FIRST.
Not a lot of authors want to do this, but freebies are a great way to get a reader's attention and get your work out there. If they like your work after you offered a freebie, then you can bet they'll invest in your next release.

EXTRA TIP:
Have two or three books available when you market. If you only have the one book available, there can be no additional sales (upsell). You'll be forgotten by readers. Have more content they can read while you are working on your next book. Because we all know that the best marketing tool is writing that next book!
